Just a hassle, but may be all I can do til I spring for a newer motherboard. I would get the current live CD away from the PC. Neither my old computer (XP) which I had used with the HD and my new one (Win 7) which has never been connected to this HD will initialize the drive. If the drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility, then the last option is to connect the drive to another Mac.

I can only relate what worked for me.If it's not clear please ask for more details. I have a very similar issue. I've been using Slax myself. The power adapter will need to be replaced to proceed with the troubleshooting.

I agree with DOC (above) get a knoppix boot CD and have your good drive and the 80 gig one in the box. The system the Samsung drive came from was a 5 year old machine that was running XP Home -- probably SP1, but I don't know that. Don't forget about trying a 3rd party drive letter manager when you get the chance. And booting into that OS doesn't allow me to access my son's drive.

The Samsung 40GB drive is a PATA drive, and is in the Master position on the data cable. All that and still no luck. All the stuff is there.
